FIRST GENERATION

1. William RAINES1 was born about 1666.2 He died about 1722 in Brandon Parish, Prince George County, VA.2 William's will, dated February 12, 1721/22, was proved July 1722. It mentions eight of his children. They were sons; Roger, John, William Jr., Richard, and daughters; Susanna, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Rebecca. His son Thomas was not listed in the will.

1707 - On May 1, 1707, James Salmon of Surry County, planter, deeded to Wm. Rains of Parish of Westopher, Prince George County for 40 shillings, 176 acres of land at Joans Hole & mouth of Ready Branch that runs between said Rains plantation and Capt. Mallory's plantation. Witnesses: Joshua Wynne, John Hamelin, and James Binford. Signed: James (X) Salmon and Mary () Salmon. On the back of this deed there was an endorsement making over to son, Richard Rains, one piece of farm land within deed, joining upon upper side of the Great Branch, I do make over to my son, Thomas Rains.

1715 - Wm. Rains of Prince George County deeded on July 5, 1715 to Thomas Rains of same, for natural love and affection I bear my son, Thos. Rains, land on the north side of Joans Hole Swamp, being part of a tract taken up by patent by James Salmon, 76 acres. Witnesses: Robt. Poythress, Wm. Stainback, and Francis Epes. Signed WRains. Recorded July 12, 1715.

1717 - He received a grant of 400 acres of land in Surry County, Virginia.

1721 - William resided on the parish of Brandon, Prince George County, where he died.

Bristol Parish initially comprised land on both sides of the Appomattox River. The part of Bristol Parish that was south of the Appomattox became part of Prince George County in 1702. The part north of the Appomattox River became part of Chesterfield County in 1749. The remainder became part of Dinwiddie County in 1752.

He was married to Elizabeth SISSON? about 1725.7 Date of marriage estimated from birth of first known child. Elizabeth SISSON? was born about 1700.3 She died on 8 Feb 1773 in Prince George County, VA.8 Thomas RAINES and Elizabeth SISSON? had the following children:

1722 - Roger had 144 acres surveyed on April 24, 1722.

1725 - He had 200 more acres surveyed on March 1, 1725/26.

4. John RAINES died about 1730 in Surry County, VA.2 John's will, dated Aug 18, 1731, was proved in Surry County, Virginia on January 19, 1731/32. The will mentions his wife, Hannah (sic.) He left lands in Brunswick County, Virginia to her and if she leaves no child, are to go to "Richard Raines' son, Nathaniel Raines and his heirs for ever." He was born in VA.2

1726 - John resided in Prince George County, Virginia as he and his wife, Ailce (sic), deeded 175 acres to John Bolling of Henrico County for 20 pounds, 11 shillings on October 24, 1726.

5. William RAINES Jr2 died after 1763 in NC.2 He was born in VA.2 William Jr. resided in Southwork Parish, Surry County, Virginia.

1713 - He received a grant for 260 acres in Surry county on November 13, 1713.

1717 - William Raines, Jr. transferred 150 acres to John Jones on May 14, 1717. The land was on the southwest side of Raccoon Swamp.

1727 - William received a grant for another 250 acres in Surry County.

1750 - He was still in Surry County when his last recorded child was listed on the register of the Albemarle Parish.

1763 - William was in Granville County, North Carolina where he deeded 400 acres on Stoney Creek to his son, Robert Wynne Raines on February 14, 1763.

1720 - Richard surveyed 275 acres of land on the north side of Butterwood Swamp on March 23, 1720 (page758).

1722 - He surveyed 120 acres on November 28, 1722 on both sides of Joan's Hole Swamp (page 760).

Captain John RAINES RS23 was born on 5 Jul 1726 in Bristol Parish, Prince George County, VA.24,25 He was christened on 2 Oct 1726.8 He died about 1788 in GA.26,27 John Raines was a member of the Committee of Intelligence, Prince George County, Virginia from 1774 to 1775 and a Captain in the militia.

He was married to Amy GOODWYN (daughter of John GOODWYNNE and Winefred TUCKER) on 5 Oct 1762 in Sussex County, VA.28,29,30 Amy GOODWYN was born on 31 Aug 1732.31 She died on 14 Jan 1773 in Sussex County, VA.32,33 The W. A. Mitchell Genealogy source says that Amy died at the birth of her daughter, Amy Goodwyn Raines. Elizabeth Hopkins' loose papers list her date of death as Thursday night at 10:00 PM on August 31, 1773. Captain John RAINES RS and Amy GOODWYN had the following children:

22. Nathaniel RAINES was born about 1748 in Albemarle Parish, Surry County, VA.41 He was christened on 21 Mar 1748 in Albemarle Parish, Surry County, VA.42 Sponsors were Charles Williams, Thos. Bonner, and Amy Raines.

He was married to Susan PARHAM on 18 Mar 1796 in Brunswick County, VA.43 At the time of the marriage Susan was a ward of John Banks. Surety provided by John Wyche and the witness was Philip Claiborne.

24. Frederick RAINES44 was born on 9 Jun 1732.8 Frederick was the son of Richard Raines of Prince George County, Virginia. Frederick was in Prince George County, Virginia in 1756. He is mentioned as the father of Frederick Raines in the marriage record of Frederick and Frances Wyche, daughter of James Wyche deceased.

He was married to Frances WYCHE (daughter of James WYCHE and Elizabeth) on 3 May 1756 in Sussex County, VA.44,28 Frances was the ward of William Johnson. Surety: Thomas Young. Witnesses: Isham Browder, Peter Jones, and Nathaniel Raines. (Sussex County, Virginia Marriage Register page 2) Frances WYCHE was born about 1739 in Surry County, VA.45,46 Date of birth estimated. Since she had a Guardian, she must have been a minor when she married.

25. Captain Nathaniel RAINES RS was born about 1735 in Prince George County, VA.47 He died about 1789 in Bristol Parish, Prince George County, VA.2,48

His will, dated April 14, 1789, was proved on July 14, 1789 in Prince George County. He left the house and plantation I live on, to include land between Bobbit's and Broad Branches, to wife Susannah for life, and after her death to son Nathaniel Raines. Also to wife negroes: Peter, Lucy, Simon, Dick, Doll, Phillie, and Bett; also various items. After her death these are to be divided between son Nathaniel and daughter Sucky Green. All rest of land in county to son Nathaniel. Other items divided between Nathaniel and Sucky Green. If both die without heirs, then everything is to be divided between grandsons Henry Lucas, son of William Lucas, Hartwell Mitchell, son of Thomas Mitchell, and John Raines, son of Hartwell Raines. Things already given to son Heartwell Raines, daughter Frances Lucas or daughter, Ann Mitchell, they are to keep. Executors were wife and sons Nathaniel and Hartwell. Witnesses were Peter Williams, Jones Bonner, and Hambleton Burge. (Will Book 2, pg. 277)

26. Captain Robert RAINES RS50,51 was born on 11 Jul 1766 in Sussex County, VA.52 He died on 31 Jul 1816 in Twiggs County, GA.53 Robert served as Captain of Dragoons in the Revolutionary War. One source reported that he was a Captain in the 4th Company, 1st Regiment, Georgia. He was also a Major in the Georgia Militia.

1810 - He was a member of the House of Representatives from Hancock County, Georgia in 1810 and again in 1811.

He was married to Sarah Thweatt HAMILTON (daughter of John HAMILTON and Tabitha THWEATT) in Hancock County, GA.23,54,55,56 Sarah Thweatt HAMILTON was born on 28 Nov 1775 in Amelia County, VA.57,58,59,60 She died on 13 Jul 1850 in Thomasville, Thomas County, GA.61 Captain Robert RAINES RS and Sarah Thweatt HAMILTON had the following children:

29. Amy Goodwyn RAINES73,74 was born on 14 Jan 1773 in Sussex County, VA.75,76 She died on 7 Oct 1840 in Madison County, AL.77,78 Amy's mother died at her birth. She was raised by her uncle, Peterson Goodwyn of Petersburg, Virginia.

She was married to Robert STEWART on 3 May 1792 in Dinwiddie County, VA.79,80 Amy was the second wife of Robert Stewart. Robert STEWART81 was born on 4 Apr 1756 in Scotland.82 He died on 17 Nov 1840 in Madison County, AL.83 Robert immigrated to Virginia about 1787. He reportedly was wearing the "Highland Plaid and Blue Bonnet" and was of the Royal House. He had married previously and his first wife died at sea on the way from Scotland.

33. Ann RAINES47 was born on 3 Sep 1762 in Sussex County, VA.32 Davenport-Mitchell-Raines source has birthdate as 9-Mar-1762. She died on 28 May 1830 in Thomas County, GA.

She was married to Thomas Goodwin MITCHELL Jr., RS (son of Doctor Thomas MITCHELL and Amy GOODWYN) about 1779 in Prince George County, VA.47,84,85,86 Thomas Goodwin MITCHELL Jr., RS87 was born on 8 May 1756 in Sussex County, VA.32,88 Davenport-Mitchell-Raines source has birthdate as 5-Aug-1756. He died on 27 Jul 1826 in Thomas County, GA.89,90 His will mentions his children Sussanna Wyche, Emily Blackshear, Nancy Stone, Hartwell, Nathaniel, Richard, Thomas, Taylor, and John Mitchell and his grandson, Thomas Gatlin. Thomas served in the Revolutionary War in the 11th Virginia Regiment, and was promoted to Colonel of the regiment. After the war, he moved to Hancock County, Georgia and later to Montgomery County, which was cut off into Telfair County. In about 1825 he moved to the new county of Thomas where he died. He owned a large plantation and was also a large slave owner. Ann RAINES and Thomas Goodwin MITCHELL Jr., RS had the following children:
