What you don’t know could hurt you!
Voter Beware – asking the
right questions.
What you don’t know could hurt you.
There’s an old saying that what you don’t know could hurt
you and when it comes to elections, nothing could be truer. What you don’t know
could “hurt” you, or at least hurt the values you hold and that you want to see
guide your nation, state and community.
For example, did you know that incumbent 7th
District Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn has a Republican Party primary
challenger in Tom Leatherwood? Did you
know that there are six Democrats battling it out to face Republican Lamar
Alexander on the ballot for U.S. Senate in November (not including the six
Independents)? Did you know that
Congressman Steve Cohen faces two Democratic challengers and three Republicans
are vying against each other to take on Congressman Lincoln Davis? Did you know that there are some very hotly
contested primaries taking place around the state in connection with the state
legislature?
But more importantly, do you know that early voting for
these races starts this Friday, July 18!
If you are like many Tennesseans, you’ve been paying more
attention to the price of gas and groceries, the threat of war with Iran, and
the latest information on Brett Favre’s retirement (okay,
maybe not that last one unless you’re a big football fan) than you have to the
August 7 election.
But these races are important. If you don’t vote in the primaries, then your
right to vote will be diminished because a small minority of voters will have
determined what choices you will have in November. And in fact, in some cases,
once the primary is over, the election is all but over except for the shouting
in November. In many races, because of
gerrymandering, districts are either so Republican or so Democratic that there
is no general election opponent.
But voting without any information is a problem too. So, to help you sort through where some of
the state legislative candidates stand on the issues, The Family Action Council
of Tennessee has prepared a list of questions you might want to ask. You can
find these questions at
our website. So, get the questions
and find out where your local legislative candidates stand. If you don’t know who may be running for the
state legislature, then you can link here to your local election commission
where you should be able to see a sample ballot on which the candidates’ names
will be printed.
Voter Beware – asking the right questions.
They say that “knowledge is power.” And in politics that can certainly be
true. What many politicians hope is
that voters don’t know too much. That is
particularly true when it comes to the pro-life/abortion issue in
For example, in the last session, there was a major push to
pass Senate Joint Resolution (
If you care about the passage of
Another example is the issue of the House Speaker. Some legislators hope you won’t ask if they
have voted for or will vote for a Speaker that is decidedly pro-choice. But this is important. The Speaker in each Chamber decides who to
appoint to that Chamber’s committees (or in the House to Subcommittees) and
thus the Speaker determines what political philosophy will dominate the issues
before the committees.
It has been well chronicled that
So, when you go to vote, make sure you’ve asked your
questions as many ways as you can. Some
legislators are banking on the fact you won’t know enough to ask the right
question.
